Items stolen include a portrait of President Jonathan.
The Ogun State Police Command on Monday arrested seven people for allegedly burgling the Labour Party secretariat in Abeokuta and carting away party documents as well as a portrait of President Goodluck Jonathan.
The embattled secretary of the state chapter of the party, Sunday Oginni, had, on Sunday, told journalists that the secretariat was burgled and documents including the party’s registration forms stolen. He also said the incident was reported to the police. Mr. Oginni had also accused unnamed members of the party who, he said, had made plans to open a parallel secretariat of being behind the theft.
Mr. Oginni was recently suspended by the national headquarters of the party.
The seven suspects arrested on Monday were initially interrogated at Adatan police station before they were transferred to Eleweran Police Headquarters in Abeokuta. They are Ismail Odejimi, Asade Adewale, Nurudeen Ayomatokunje, Nuru Olaleye, Soji Adegbola, Micheal Ranti Adegbola and John Olaleye.
When contacted, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said he was yet to be briefed on the new development. He, however, stated that the matter was being handled by the state Criminal Investigation Department. He also said that although the complainants had accused a faction of the party of masterminding the crime, the police would widen its investigation beyond those that were accused.
“We are going to do our investigation. The Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, has directed that the matter be transferred to the state CID .It is the case of CID,” he said.
