The PDP in Ekiti says the sensitisation campaign is to prevent its members from multiple registration.
The PDP in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Wednesday commenced sensitisation of its members against double registration in the voters registration exercise.
The spokesperson of the party, Samson Olajuwon, said this in an interview in Ikole Ekiti.
He said that the exercise was to curb de-registration of voters by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.
Mr. Olajuwon said voters’ education on the electoral processes was not only the duty of INEC but that of political parties.
He stressed that parties have the responsibility of educating their members on regulations covering the conduct of elections.
The PDP official said the leadership of the party in the area was educating members on the need to understand INEC law and regulations, stressing that participation in elections as a civic responsibility should be devoid of unwholesome acts.
“We as party leaders should be able to create awareness for our members on the need to participate fully in elections,” he said.
“We should teach them proper ways of thumb printing to avoid wasted votes and other tasks essential for credible elections.
“We should campaign against political thuggery, ballot snatching and other forms of violence so that our democracy can thrive,” he said.
He urged other political parties in the state to conduct similar sensitisation exercises in order to have credible and violence free election in the state.
