The Ogun Chief Judge demanded for financial autonomy for the state’s judiciary.
The Ogun State Government on Monday gave 24 Prado Jeeps to judges in the state as official vehicles.
The keys to the vehicles were handed over by Governor Ibikunle Amosun at the State High Court premises in Abeokuta as part of activities to herald the 2013/14 legal year.
The state governor said the action was taken to boost the productivity of the judges and enhance their efficiency.
Mr. Amosun, while handing over the keys to the State Chief Judge, Adetokunbo Olopade, said the government would continue to provide an enabling environment for the judiciary to function efficiently.
The governor said the presentation of the vehicles, “is a sign of good things to come and I want to assure you that we are going to ensure completion of all projects for the Judiciary.”
In her reaction, Ms. Olopade, asked for financial independence for the judiciary in the state. She said financial independence of the judiciary would make it more effective.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the presentation, the judge said the judiciary in the state, “will continue to remain unbiased in the discharge of our duties.
“We hope to do more than last year and let me appreciate this gesture from the state governor.”
Ms. Olopade said funding was the major problem confronting the judiciary in Ogun.
“Certainly it (funding) is not enough. That is why we are seeking independence; financial independence, which
will allow us to do so many things ourselves,” she said.
She assured that judges in the state would be continually trained and retrained to become more efficient.
