A suspect was caught while trying to burgle a house in Ibadan.
The Oyo State Police Command has warned residents against taking the laws into their hands after apprehending suspected criminals.
The spokesperson of the command, Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor, gave the warning in Ibadan on Friday while reacting to an incident in which a suspected burglar was beaten to stupor by an irate mob in Oke Ayo area of Ibadan.
She told the News Agency of Nigeria that apprehended crime suspects should be handed over to the police or other law enforcement agencies.
“Nobody has the right to treat any suspect in such an inhuman manner and it is wrong for anyone to assume the position of a law enforcement agent.
“Anyone found to be acting to the contrary would be arrested and prosecuted,” she said.
She recalled that the suspect was apprehended on Monday at about 4.00 a.m. by one Sunday Ajayi of Oke Ayo area of Ibadan.
“Ajayi said that he was in his boys’ quarters when he heard a strange noise coming from the main building of the house.
“On getting to the main building, he sighted the burglar trying to escape by jumping over the fence.
“He was fast enough to pull down the burglar and a fight ensued which led to both of them sustaining injuries.
“Other tenants in the house soon joined in the fight and overpowered the suspect.
“The burglar was beaten by an irate mob before he was later brought to the police station,” she said.
She added that items recovered from the suspect included a cutlass, two chisel iron, torchlight and a piece of broken ceiling.
Clet-Ilobanafor, however, said the injured suspect was presently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Ibadan.
She added that the scene of the crime had been visited while further investigation would reveal if the suspect operated alone or as a team.
