Cases of rape is are becoming regular occurrences in Ogun state.
A 22 year old man has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly raping a 12 year old girl, who he lured into the bush and then defiled.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the arrest in a statement made available to PREMIUM TIMES in Abeokuta, said the suspect, Imoleayo Adekoya, who resides at number 22 Ado Street, Sagamu was arrested on Sunday.
Mr. Adejobi added that the victim was sent on errand by her mother on Saturday when the suspect allegedly accosted her and lured her into the bush before raping her.
The girl’s parent became worried when she didn’t return home as expected and a search began. The girl later appeared with blood stains on her body.
The suspect was quickly rounded up, and he reportedly confessed to the crime.
The police spokesperson said, “The Ogun state police command on Sunday arrested one Imoleayo Adekoya ,22, of Ado Street, off Hospital Road, Sagamu for raping a girl of 12 year old on Saturday in a bushy area around his house’ the statement said.
‘The victim of the rape, who was being searched for by a team when she couldn’t return home on time, was sent on errand by her mother to a nearby market when she was lured into the bush by the suspect.”
Mr. Adejobi said the case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Abeokuta for thorough investigation; adding that the suspect would be charged to court.
He further stated that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikemefuna Okoye had assured the parent of the victim and the good people of Ogun state of justice in the matter.
He also warned those fond of raping women to stop as the command would no longer tolerate any such obnoxious act.
