Women’s actions contribute to family break-up- Ajede

A gender group had a program in Ogun.

A guest lecturer at the 2013 Anniversary of Gender Development Initiative, GENDI, Salamat Ajede, has identified the nonchalance of many married women as the main reason why they lose their husbands to other women.

The event tagged ‘The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum in both Economic Activities and Home Building In Our Contemporary Society’ took place in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Mrs. Ajede noted that some wives tend to leave all household work to their maid including cooking and “making the bed for the head of the home.”

She added that some wives leave their matrimonial homes for days on business trips, leaving their maids at home to act as “relief wives” to their husbands. Eventually, she said, the maids end up usurping the original wives and become the wives to the man.

Mrs. Ajede, who is a wife of a traditional ruler in the state, asked married women to rethink their attitude in the interest of their matrimonial home and give adequate attention and care to their husbands.

Earlier in her welcome speech, the Chief Executive Officer of Gender Development Initiative, Olubunmi Ashimolowo, said the body is a non-governmental organisation, NGO, working to reduce the plight of disadvantaged women and children in the society.

Mrs. Ashimolowo, a lecturer at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, said the women in the group have been able to change the lives of a lot of the children.

“It is with a great sense of privilege that we at Gendi have taken it over to pause and celebrate the achievements so far, to hear from distinguished, celebrated and successful women and entrepreneurs and to inspire us all to continue our work to address the inequalities and challenges that remain for women and girls.”
