NURTW members stage revenge attack on leader’s murderer

The NURTW members allegedly razed the house of a man suspected to be their leader’s killer.

People suspected to be members the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, set ablaze a building belonging to one Moshood Oladokun at Born Photo area of Ibadan on Wednesday.

Mr. Oladokun, whose masquerade, Ekugbemi, was said to be responsible for the killing of the chairman of Agbeni unit of NURTW, Rafiu Adebayo, has been on the run since the transport union leader was gruesomely murdered on Sunday.

The irate unionists, who mobilized themselves to the scene in large numbers, were said to have vandalized the building before setting it on fire.

About 12 people were said to have sustained serious injuries in the melee.

The remains of Mr. Adebayo, popularly called Ola Ruffy, was laid to rest his Oke-Ado family house in Ibadan on Wednesday.

The latest attack was in defiance to the plea from the state chairman of the union, Taofeek Oyerinde, on Tuesday.

The state boss of the union had admonished his members to desist from taking law into their hands in the name of avenging the killing, asking them to allow the police to do its job.

Also, a leader in the city, the Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Lekan Balogun, condemned the killing of Mr. Adebayo, describing it as barbaric.

Mr. Balogun, who received some masquerades at his Aliiwo, Ibadan ancestral home, urged members of the NURTW in the state not to take laws into their hands.

The state police command, on Tuesday, announced the arrest of nine persons in connection with the killing of the union leader.

Also commenting the arson in Ibadan on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, confirmed the attack. He said no one had been arrested.
The police spokesperson described the incident as very unfortunate, saying that it was wrong to cure criminality with criminality.

“The information we got was that some members of the NURTW left the venue of the burial unannounced to Ekungbemi’s house. The house was burnt down. When our men got wind of this they immediately called for more policemen from Iyaganku police headquarters, but on sighting police vans, all the attackers ran away.

“My message to the public is that you cannot cure criminality with criminality. Already, the police has waded into the killing of Adebayo and the best thing is to leave the matter to the police.

“The suspect, Ekugbemi has been called upon to turn himself in already. So, why the burning of the building? I can assure you that all those involved in the act will be brought to book,” she said.
