Confusion in Ogun over Democracy Day celebration

The Ogun State government does not regard May 29 as Democracy Day.

Ogun residents, in the mood to celebrate the second year of the Ibikunle Amosun administration in Ogun State and the May 29 Democracy Day celebration, were disappointed as the governor and other top government officials shunned the celebration.

Various groups including the National Union of Road Transporters Workers, market women associations, students, and non-governmental organisations arrived at the Moshood Abiola International Stadium and June 12 Cultural Centre, both in Abeokuta, as early 8.00 a.m.

They groups, dressed in their various uniforms, waited endlessly for the governor and other officials.

They, however, became bewildered after hours of waiting, when neither the governor nor any of the officials showed up and no one could tell them if the governor would come.

Members of the participating groups decided to fold up their banners and loitered around the premises.

A policeman who was on standby for the ceremony told our correspondent he did not know if the governor would attend, adding that he was as confused as the other participants as his police team and other security operatives had been deployed to the venues since 6.30 a.m.

Many petty traders who also came to make brisk sales lamented the situation

Similarly, a group of commercial motorcyclists, that came with agenda of promoting a second term agenda for the governor were shocked. They all returned to their homes disappointed.

PREMIUM TIMES, however, gathered that the state government does not reckon with May 29 as Democracy Day.

The state recognises June 12, the day the election of Moshood Abiola as president of Nigeria, was held in 1993, as its official democracy day.

Mr. Abiola was an indigene of Ogun State.
