The teachers failed their promotional exams.
About 428 Oyo State workers, who participated in a recent promotion examination, have been declared unfit for promotion.
The State Commissioner for Education, Tokunbo Fayokun, disclosed this to journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday.
The “unfit” workers were among the 12,504 in the state’s public schools, who sat for the examination.
The state government has approved the promotion of the remaining 12, 076 teaching and non-teaching staff.
The commissioner said the promotion will cost the government approximately N42.4 million, to implement the payment of salaries and allowances for the affected staff.
She said the governor granted the approval in line with the transformation agenda of his administration, adding that the promotion were for the years 2009 and 2010.
Ms. Fayokun also noted that the exercise was done with strict adherence to the rules of workers’ promotion as enshrined in the service rules. She said the promotion interview, which affected workers from levels 6 to 15, was conducted by the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, ASCON, for 12,504 teaching and non-teaching staff of public schools in the state, from which 12,076 were picked.
Others from level 01 to 05 had their examinations conducted by the Simeon Adebo Staff Development Centre, SASDC.
“The governor approved these promotions because he realizes the importance of promotion in motivating teacher performance and boosting the image of the administration in its quest at repositioning and transforming education in the state,” the commissioner said.
