The families were also promised N500 thousand each for burial expenses

The Ogun State Government on Wednesday announced N1 million cash gift to each of the families of the five policemen who were shot dead by armed robbers last Sunday in the State.

The policemen were killed in Abeokuta and Ibafo towns during separate robbery operations after a gun duel with the robbers. Three were killed when armed robbers attacked a church house at Ijemo-Agbadu, Abeokuta; while the other two were killed at Ibafo, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the State.

The deceased include: Ugwu Christopher (Inspector), Esoda Usala (Inspector), Adejor James (Sergeant), Nwachukwu Nduka (Sergeant) and Istefanus Day (Corporal).

The Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, who spoke on behalf of the governor, said each family shall also be assisted with an extra N500 thousand for the burial expenses.

“The governor has approved sum of N500 thousand for each family for burial expenses, while in separate arrangements, the cheque of N1 million will be handed over to each family as financial assistance for the widows and children,” Mr. Adeoluwa said.

The government scribe, accompanied by the Ogun State Police Commissioner, Ikemefuna Okoye, prayed for the family of the bereaved over the tragic loss.

“Government commends and salutes the bravery of the officers even in death. Our thought and prayers with the widows, children and families,” he said.

Mr. Adeoluwa said the state government will not be discouraged by the calamity, as it has also directed the police command to fish out the criminals.

Responding on behalf of the deceased families, Ayogu David thanked the state government for coming to their aid.

“Our thanks go to government and police for the kind help rendered to our families,” Mr. David said.
