Ogun nurses strike over staff shortage

The nurses have embarked on a three-day warning strike.

Nurses in Ogun State have embarked on a three-day warning strike which has paralysed several health services in state hospitals.

The strike, which entered its second day on Tuesday, affected State Hospitals and Primary Health Care Centres across the state.

The grouse of the nurses, under the banner of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, is the alleged non-challance of the government towards improving the manpower development in the health sector.

A visit to some hospitals including the State Hospital, Ijaye; Abeokuta South Local Government Primary Heath Center, Oke-Ilewo; Olikoye Ransome Kuti Memorial Hospital, Asero; and Oba Ademola Hospital, Ijemo; all within Abeokuta metropolis showed the nurses abandoned work.

Many patients were found stranded at the hospitals without anybody to attend to them. The Out Patient Department (OPD) was also deserted. Patients on admission beds at the hospitals also complained of absence of health workers to attend to their needs.

Prior to the three-day strike, the nursing body issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government, which lapsed on October 18, where they complained of gross shortage of nurses and midwives in all the health centers and hospitals across the state. They also complained that the few available personnel were over-laboured causing many of them to fall ill.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Olaokun Soyinka, did not pick his calls or respond to text messages on the response of the state government to the strike.
