The crisis in Ogbozinne community, Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, has claimed the life of its traditional ruler, Steven Nwatu.
A source traced the problem in the community to the setting up of a town union leadership, a move allegedly resisted by the late ruler.
It was gathered that for over 10 years since the late ruler was enthroned, there had been no union, an issue that divided the community into two factions.
The matter caused the opposing group (those who wanted the union) to carry out a protest to the Enugu Government House before dragging the traditional ruler to court.
Although there are currently different versions of what led to his death, it was reported that a group from his community attacked him when he came with police officers to effect an arrest.
The group reportedly disarmed the policemen, beat the traditional ruler, then stripped him naked.
He was later rushed to Park Lane Hospital Enugu, where he died.
Another version said both factions were invited to the Government House on Monday but the traditional ruler allegedly tried to stop the meeting before he was beaten to death.
Following the killing, over 200 houses were reportedly razed by group loyal to the late ruler.
The spokesman of the police in Enugu State, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the murder
He said that the state criminal intelligence and investigation department has commenced investigation
He said the investigation will unravel “the circumstances surrounding the incident as well as those involved.”
