Tragedy struck Friday morning in Ebonyi State as eight members of a family in Ohufu village, Ogboji community in Ishielu local government area were burnt to death in a fire outbreak.

Among those killed in the disaster include a woman and her seven children while the husband, Sylvanus Nefuru and one of the children, Ukamaka Nwefuru, are the only members of the family who escaped.

Although the cause of the fire could not be ascertained at the time of filling this report, PREMIUM TIMES gathered the incident happened at 3am.

One of the survivors, Ukamaka Nwefuru, said her mother rescued her and went to save another member of the family when she was caught by the fire and she died.

The fire outbreak razed two thatched houses where the family members were sleeping.

Sylvanus Nweferu, an 80-year old man, told our reporter that he heard a loud noise while in deep sleep which woke him up.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ishielu local government area, Henry Eze, lamented the death of the family and called on security agents to investigate the matter.
