A medical doctor, Johnson Obuna, has been kidnapped at his private hospital at Aguogboriga Estate in Abakaliki by unknown gunmen.

Mr. Obuna is a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of Nigeria, and also works as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

He was kidnapped as he was leaving his hospital after the day’s work at about 9pm Wednesday.

Reacting to the incident, the state chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Agwu Umahi, said the association was planning an emergency meeting on Thursday to sensitize its members on the development to pressure the authorities to ensure the quick release of Mr. Obuna.

The NMA threatened to embark on strike if their colleague was not released.

They said such abduction of its members was fast becoming a trend on the state.

In a statement, the Ebonyi state police command assured the general public that the medical doctor would soon be released as the command was on top of the situation.

Already, the Commissioner of police, Peace Ibekwe Abdullah, has visited the victim’s family and has deployed officers toward to hunt the kidnappers.
