2 brothers docked for allegedly belonging to MASSOB

Two brothers, Chinedu Mba, 32, and Sunday Mba, 50, were on Monday docked at a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

The accused are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful body.

The ​p​rosecutor, A.O. Fadipe, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on February 23 at No.22, Ajijedudun St., off Agunberi Bus Stop, Ijeshatedo, Lagos.

Mr. Fadipe said that the accused had in their possessions prohibited MASSOB membership identity cards and one pound of Biafran currency.

He said the offences contravened Sections 42 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 42(a) of the law says that any person who is a member of an unlawful society is liable to imprisonment for three years.

The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, A.O. Soladoye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government, be residing in Lagos and show genuine means of livelihood.

She adjourned the case till April 3 for mention.
