We’ve spent N10bn on 2nd Niger Bridge so far — Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan said the Federal Government has spent N10 billion on construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge out of the N130 billion total cost of the project.

The President disclosed this when he stopped over at the project site in Asaba on Saturday on his way to PDP campaign in Onitsha, Anambra.

Mr. Jonathan said it was a big project being executed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

He said that now that it had taken off, its execution would go on smoothly and uninterrupted through to 48 months completion period.

“So far, out of the N130 billion total cost of the project, we have spent about N10 billion.

“It is a big project and now that it has taken off, it will go on smoothly through the 48 months completion time.

“The project is a PPP arrangement, I am quite impressed with what I have seen,” he said.

He added that most components required for the construction had been procured and piling work had commenced.

The Minister of Works, Mike Onolomemen, said a lot had been done since the flag off of the project in March 2014.

Mr. Onolememen said the contracting firm, Julius Berger Nigeria, was engaged because of its antecedents, adding that almost all the procurements for the construction of the bridge were imported.

According to him, work was in progress with the piles being driven into the ground and dredging going on along the River Niger.

“For us, it is a thing of joy and certainly before the next raining season, a lot of piles would have been driven in. No doubt, development of infrastructure takes a long time.”

Detler Lubasch, Managing Director, Julius Berger, said work on the project would be sustained.

Mr. Lubasch said the project would be of enormous social and economic benefits and significance to the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the President was accompanied to the project site by former Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra, among other dignitaries.

Lagos – Ibadan road “resurfacing” has taken about 10yrs (4yrs of OBJ + 6yrs of Dumbo) and yet still ongoing. If anyone thinks this fathom bridge construction, whose paper work was quickly put together because of oncoming election, will take off in 4 yrs not to talk of completion, then you are gullible !

    • Exclusive Obix

The Clueless President has been unable to build the Road leading to Bayelsa of which His Wife’s Mother (Foster I guess) died on…Deceitful to build a bridge for the Ibo Nation. Ibos shine your eyes…Buhari (North) 8yrs then it will be the turn of the Ibos as the Yoruba Nation have done theirs plus SS (6yrs). Equity in action…

Why will it take the Pdp Govt 4yrs to build a bridge that is less than 2 km?

  • Stomach Infrastructure

If Dumbo used 6 years to lay the foundation of madness, how many years is he going to use to bite people? Dumbo and PDP should stop deceiving themselves. The question Igbos should ask is, “Where is the bridge?”. Nigerians should tell Dumbo to, “Show us the bridge”. N10 billion my foot!

N130B for a bridge not upto 3KM long? I cry for my country.

“When the first bridge was built, it was during the presidency of Nnamdi Azikiwe; the second Niger bridge will be built under the presidency of Azikiwe Jonathan.” “I will go on exile on the completion of my term in office if I didn’t build the bridge by 2015”
That was during 2011 campaign. He is laying the foundation for the bridge unshamedly during the 2015 campaign. Pls hail rev, Mbaka who is not gullible

Thats good news for our Ibo brothers. IBB built the longest bridge in Africa (11.8km)without tooling it. GEJ is building 1.59km to be tolled for 25years. When the first Niger bridge was built, how many years was it tolled for?
Beside, the cost was initally stated at N117b and now N130b. This is good new for the Ibos. Up GEJ!!!

They have stolen N10 billion Naira so far. good news to the Ibo’s

I can boldly say that is2nd Niger bridge is dead at birth. And her is my reason.
‘T he Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, said on Tuesday in Abuja that N117 billion will be spent to construct the second Niger Bridge.Onolememen made this known while defending the ministry’s budget before the Sen. Abdul Ningi (PDP-Bauchi) led Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).The minister said that N30 billion of the amount would be sourced from the SURE-P while the balance would come from the private sector partners.’
You see that 30b seed money for the project is to come from the SURE-P which get its revenue fro the project2011 petrol subsidy removal. Today it’s reported that the govt has reduced the pump price. That is bidding SURE-P bye bye and thus death knell to come2nd Niger bridge.

  • embeleyi

Lagos Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat in a chat with newsmen “building a bridge is not a joke; it’s not something you can do within a week or two weeks, so there are all sorts of things that need to be on ground depending on the complexity of the bridge.
“Remember that when motorists exit the bridge, they will need an exit route. In vanguard February 12, 2014

Pig, you want to mock. Your hatred will be your own undoing. Am not in support of the project, but don’t mock the ibos, because if your own tribe, had gone through all that the ibos have gone through, you wouldn’t have recovered so quickly. So watch what you say.

      • Bidemi Lukman

Bros, you response clearly shows you are pig calling someone else pig.

My statement is ironical and only people of understanding mind can comprehend.
