The Bayelsa State Chapter of People’s Democratic Party, PDP, on Thursday called on party members to unite to move the country forward.
The Bayelsa PDP Chairman, Samuel Inokoba, made the call while briefing some reporters in Yenagoa at the Party Secretariat.
“It is worthy of note that recently, there has been a precipitated rise in political activities by groups in the country, which Bayelsa State has not been left out.
“And sequel to the various rallies, meetings and associations under the banner of calling on Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to run for 2015 polls, the members of the Executive Committee of PDP hereby issue the following statement.
“That support for Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in Bayelsa State, being his natural base and home state is intact and therefore, such rallies can become counterproductive.
“That party faithful and political interest groups in Bayelsa that are desirous of facilitating and supporting Pro-Jonathan rallies should concentrate their energy and resources in other parts of the country.
“That henceforth, all party faithful are enjoined to confer, consult with the party hierarchy in the state before embarking on any such objective to ensure decorum and orderliness,” he stated.
A group within Bayelsa PDP, called ‘The New Dawn Development Initiative, had their rally, scheduled to hold last week in Yenagoa, disrupted by the state Police Command.
The proposed rally was to call on President Goodluck Jonathan to declare his intention to run for 2015 presidential election.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relation Officer, Alex Akhigbe, the Police Command directed the members of the group known as ‘New Dawn Initiative Development’ to reschedule their rally.
The rally was billed to take place at Opolo Secondary school, Yenagoa.
Mr. Akhigbe said the police’ action was premised on the available intelligence to the command that a rival group had perfected plans to attack and disrupt the rally which could have led to breach of peace.
Mr. Akhigbe said the police did observe the actual gathering of the mob at the venue.
