The couple may have been targeted by son’s creditors.
Gunmen on Monday abducted one Joel Kido and his wife at Konga, a coastal and fishing settlement at Akassa area of Bayelsa.
The eight armed men were, however, outwitted by Mr. Kido who escaped while being taken to an unknown destination.
The Bayelsa Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES.
“The Police is working out modalities to free the kidnapped woman and arrest the abductors,” Mr. Akhigbe said.
The gunmen invaded the couple’s home at about 11 p.m. on Monday, firing gunshots. It was speculated by neighbours that the kidnappers may have targeted the couple to get back at their son, a businessman, who is in debt to his employees and business associates.
A family source confirmed that no contact has been established with the gunmen as at Tuesday.
Kidnapping for ransom is common in Bayelsa despite a law that punishes the crime with the death penalty.
