Group asks Okorocha to apologise to Jonathan over “sweep-off PDP’s footprints in Imo”

Rochas Okorocha, Imo State governor

The group lambasted women who participated in the exercise

A group, Ndigbo Cultural Society of Nigeria, NCSN, has demanded an apology from the governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, and his administration over the conduct of some women who participated in the “Imo Women Sweep out Jonathan and PDP’ exercise.

Describing the conduct of the women as “shameful and uncultured”, NCSN, in a statement on Wednesday by its president, Udoka Udeogaranya, said the exercise was alien to the Igbo culture and tradition.

Hundreds of women had on February 24 protested against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its leaders over alleged provocative statements they made during the party’s rally two days earlier. Mr. Jonathan attended the rally during which some of the members of the party who had defected to other parties returned.

The women marched along the streets of Owerri, the state capital, denouncing the PDP for wasting the state’s resources throughout the 12 years it was in power.

“Such exercise against a president of a country or father of our nation is not only alien to Ndigbo culture, but have no place in the tradition and religious faith of Ndigbo, whereby we have been brought up to respect our fathers and mothers, not to mention the father of our nation,” the NCSN said.

“While we believe in the freedom of political association, we must be careful over the type of conduct we import into Igboland, for there is nothing Imo State stands to gain by being insulting against a sitting president of the nation.”

The NCSN said it believed that Mr. Okorocha was a true son of Igboland and a genuine Christian by faith, therefore, would not have supported such an exercise.

It added, “For the avoidance of doubt we urge him to publicly apologize to Mr. President on behalf of the renegades parading themselves as Imo Women.”

The group asked the governor to go into alliance with opposition parties in the state and the party at the centre so as to attract amenities to Imo State.

It said the Nigeria Peoples Party, NPP, which produced the Second Republic Governor of the state, Sam Mbakwe, formed an alliance with former President Shehu Shagari’s party, National Party of Nigeria, NPN, in order to attract amenities to state.
