The death toll from the cholera outbreak in Ikwo Local Government Area in Ebonyi has risen to four following the death of one more person in a general hospital.
The Deputy Governor of the state, Dave Umahi, announced the development on Wednesday while inaugurating the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week at the Afikpo North Local Government Area.
He said the government had put modalities in place to forestall further casualties from the disease.
He said the government had set up a nine-man committee comprising staff of the ministry of health and the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, to tackle incidences of cholera and Lassa fever in the state.
The deputy governor urged the people to always keep their environment clean and drink water supplied by the state government.
In a remark, the Commissioner for Health, Sunday Nwangele, reminded the people of the need to bring out their children for immunisation.
Mr. Nwangele said people who stopped their children and wards from immunisation should desist from doing so or face the wrath of the government.
He encouraged the local governments and other stakeholders to reciprocate the state government’s effort in checking mortality and mobility by taking such programmes to the grassroots.
The outbreak of cholera was reported three weeks ago in Ikwo.
Two other persons suspected to be suffering from the disease are receiving treatment at the Ikwo General Hospital.
