Opposition party outraged that Governor delivered speech at event
The South East zonal chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has challenged the Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and the National Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Victor Umeh, to accept responsibility for the Uke adoration ground tragedy, which claimed 28 lives, with scores injured.
The party stated this in a statement through its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu, on Monday.
It also demanded an unreserved apology from Messrs Obi and Umeh, to calm the frayed nerves of the bereaved and the good people of the state, and asked them to eschew playing the blame game.
“We are challenging His Excellency the Governor of Anambra State, Governor Peter Obi and the National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Umeh, to candidly apologize to the families of the bereaved and the good people of Anambra State for their political desperado, hence the extension of their campaign to the holy adoration ground,” the party said.
“We are outraged that instead of being remorseful and apologetic, Governor Obi and Chief Umeh are playing blame games with the lives of innocent citizens. We are also alarmed with Chief Umeh’s call for Senator (Chris) Ngige’s arrest. We detest the Do-or-Die posture Chief Umeh is adopting in the campaign.”
The party wondered why Mr. Obi delivered a speech during the service, adding that from its findings, the governor had never done so before. It noted that services at the venue were usually for spiritual uplifting, renewal, mediation, and communion with God.
“Adoration ground is not a wedding service. Therefore, if not for political desperado, what necessitated Governor Obi’s campaign speech at the adoration ground?”
The APC also commiserated with the families of the deceased, urging them to accept its heart-felt condolences and take solace that their beloved died in the house of God.
