Why PDP panel disqualified two Anambra governorship aspirants – Official

Anambra governorship election comes up in November.

The panel set up by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to screen governorship aspirants in Anambra has finally dropped two aspirants, Sylvester Okonkwo and Onwuanyim Afamaefuna. Both men were dropped over discrepancies in their tax documents.

The panel headed by former Zamfara State Governor, Mahmud Shinkafi, had disqualified four of the17 aspirants last week over tax issues. However, the panel on Tuesday cleared two of the aspirants – Tony Nwoye and Ugochukwu Okeke.

Mr. Shinkafi, who announced the result of the screening at a press conference at the PDP headquarters in Abuja, said the panel had now cleared 15 aspirants to contest the August 24 party primaries.

All the 17 aspirants paid N11m each for Expression of Interest (N1m) form and Nomination Form (N10m).

Mr. Shinkafi said the panel disqualified Messrs Okonkwo and Afamaefuna because it did not want the PDP to present a candidate that would eventually have problem with the Independent National Electoral Commission over tax issues.

The Anambra governorship election will come up in November while the PDP would choose its candidate on August 24.
