Evans Bipi recently said Patience Jonathan is his Jesus Christ.
The leader of the five anti-Amaechi lawmakers in Rivers State, Evans Bipi, has insisted that he remains the authentic Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Mr. Bipi, who led four other members of the 32-member Assembly in a plot to impeach the speaker, Otelemaba Dan-Amachree, claimed he was validly elected speaker. The move by Mr. Bipi, a loyalist of the Nigerian first lady, Patience Jonathan, to impeach the speaker led to violence in the Assembly last week Tuesday.
Mr. Dan-Amachree, who had resumed sitting with about 23 lawmakers the same day after the thugs were overpowered, has maintained that his leadership of the Assembly remained intact.
However, in an interview with journalists at the State House, Abuja, at the end of the presidential dinner in honour of delegates to the African Union Summit on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on Monday night, Mr. Bipi claimed he was elected by 23 lawmakers.
“Of course, it is not contestable; I remain the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly because I have not been impeached.”
“A motion for impeachment was placed on the Speaker and I emerged as the Speaker and I have not been impeached,” Mr. Bipi said.
Responding to allegations that only five members voted him speaker, against the rules, he said: “How would it be five? We formed a quorum. It was a full house and I was duly elected. It was over twenty-three lawmakers.”
Also responding on a video clip showing him punching somebody on the floor of the chamber, he said: “Myself punching? That is a framed work of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.”
“I want to thank God Almighty for making it possible for me to serve my people once more.”
“But the only regrettable thing is the governor coming to the hallowed chamber to supervise the beating of my honourable colleagues.
“It’s so sad. Governor of a state bringing down all the security apparatus in the government house including his ADC and CSO beating duly elected honourable members in the hallowed chamber.
“It is so degrading and embarrassing. So I thank God Almighty,” he stated.
Mr. Bipi recently stirred controversy when he was caught, in a video released by PREMIUM TIMES, describing Mrs. Jonathan as his Jesus Christ.
