Group defends Anambra Judge over judgement on APGA

The group said court judgment validating the national convention of the opposition party was in order.

A group, National Justice and Human Rights Forum, NJHRF, has warned the leader of Abuja Civil Society Forum, Oyetakin Ebenezer, to stop insulting the judge of the Awka High Court, Anambra State, Hope Ozuh, who delivered a judgement in favour of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, last April 8.

Mr. Ebenezer had, at a press conference on Tuesday asked the Nigeria Judicial Council, NJC, to investigate Mr. Ozuh alleging that he compromised his office in the APGA suit.

NJHRF, represented by its National Coordinator, said in a statement on Wednesday that Mr. Ebenezer was carrying out a hatchet job, adding that he did not read the judgement before rushing to the media to lambast the judge.

“NJHRF is on notice of a statement credited to one Oyetakin Ebenezer using a hurriedly coined name, Abuja Civil Society Forum to carry out a hatchet job of attacking the reputation, integrity and credibility of erudite Justice Hope Ozoh of the Awka High Court, Anambra State who delivered a judgement validating the peaceful and popular APGA National Convention held in Awka on 8thApril, 2013.

“It is obvious that Ebenezer and his sponsors did not read the court process and judgment before rushing to the media to lambast a highly esteemed judicial officer.

“NJHRF strongly condemns the rascality, recklessness and arrogance of political turn coats and buccaneers masquerading as the conscience of the society who would go to any length to tarnish the image and integrity of seasoned judicial Officers for a mess of porridge.

“A failed politician whose political party, the defunct Nigerian Advance Party was de – registered by INEC in 2012. Ebenezer is notorious in executing a hatchet job of character assassination.”

The group said that the Abuja Civil Society Forum was concocted to execute his infamous character assassination of Mr. Uzoh for having delivered a judgment that did not favour his paymaster.

It noted that it is unfortunate that “a political liability like Ebenezer could be hired to insult and castigate an honourable Justice of Anambra High Court.”

NJHRF argued further, “If a matter is pending in the Court of Appeal, is it not exceptional recklessness for an interloper like Ebenezer to meddle in the appellate court preceding? It is wicked to harass, intimidate and threaten judicial officers who are discharging their constitutional duties without fear or favour.

“We supports and commends the efforts of the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judiciary Council to sanitize the Judiciary and discipline erring judicial officers but we strongly condemn any attempt by disgruntle elements to bring the integrity of our highly esteemed Judges to disrepute.

“In an abnormal haste to please his sponsors, Ebenezer grossly exposed his ignorance of the law. The Court of Appeal ruling did not vacate the order of the Enugu High Court that a fresh National Convention of the party should be conducted. That order of court was obeyed before the appellate court ruling which also did not vacate it as it was declaratory.

“A million Ebenezers lampooning Hon. Justice Hope Uzoh cannot change the position of the law. On the contrary, it will only expose the desperation of political hirelings who would set aside decency to insult, harass, intimidate and threaten honourable judicial, officers.

“NJC is made up of distinguished jurists who would not dissipate energy treating frivolous and spurious petitions against highly esteemed Judges.

“The Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court are there to validate or vacate judgments of various high courts in Nigeria. Enough of these meddlesome interlopers like Oyetakin Ebenezer in judicial process.”
