The accused denied the charge.
Joel Asogwa, a native of Opi in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Enugu for raping a 55-year-old woman.
Mr. Asogwa is facing a two-count charge of raping a woman old enough to be his mother and forcing somebody’s wife into bed without an agreement.
The prosecution counsel, Moses Anyaji, told the court that his client was raped on her husband’s matrimonial bed on July 8, 2011.
Mr. Anyaji said that the accused covered his face when he was raping his client but that he did not know when the woman removed what he used to cover his face.
“The accused hails from the same village as the plaintiff. When the plaintiff saw that she knew the accused, she shouted and the neighbours came to her help,’’ he said.
Countering the argument, the counsel to the accused, Titus Eze, said his client went to see a friend near the plaintiff’s house when the plaintiff called him to help her check something in her house.
“The next thing my client heard was a shout for help from the woman that she had been raped,’’ he said.
The presiding judge, Justice D.V. Agishi, adjourned the case till May 30 for trial.
