A group, Ivo Progressive Assembly, IPA, has called on the Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, Celestine Eze, to submit himself for interrogation over alleged complicity in a murder case in the council.
This call comes on the heels of a peaceful protest embarked on by the Nigerian Union of local Government Employees, NULGE, Ivo Chapter. The workers had called on the state governor, Martin Elechi, to stop the police from intimidating the council boss.
But IPA said the protest was a gimmick and a ploy by the local council boss to draw sympathy to himself and create enmity between the state government and some political stakeholders from the council who are behind the governor in his drive to better the lot of the people in the state.
The group urged Governor Elechi to ignore the antics of the council boss who they alleged sponsored the protesting workers.
Briefing newsmen in Abakaliki, the group led by Martin Onu and Cyril Orji, Chairman and Secretary respectively, condemned in strong terms the reports of intimidation arguing that the chairman should answer to the invitation sent to him by the police over the murder case.
The group said the chairman should simply submit himself for interrogation as he would be released if found innocent of the crime.
“Is he saying that because he is a chairman of a local government, the police have no right to interrogate him over allegations levelled against him in a murder case? Or is he saying that the Police should just stop doing their duty of investigating the matter just because he has been indicted,” the group said.
