The Editor-in-Chief of PREMIUM TIMES, Musikilu Mojeed, will be speaking at the 10th Piauí International Journalism Festival in São Paulo, Brazil, where leading newsroom editors from seven countries will discuss the challenges of running media organisations in the face of political, social and institutional pressures.
The festival, scheduled for 5 and 6 September at the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paulo, has the theme, “In the Eye of the Hurricane – Newsroom Captains Through the Storm.”

Mr Mojeed is among eight international newsroom leaders selected for the festival, alongside senior editors and former editors of some of the world’s prominent news organisations.
Daniel Bergamasco, executive editor of Piauí and curator of the festival, sent the invitation to Mr Mojeed.

In his invitation, Mr Bergamasco said the organisers selected newsroom leaders who had made “outstanding contributions at the helm of media organisations around the world.”
“I became more familiar with your work while conducting research for the festival’s curation, and I was truly impressed,” Mr Bergamasco said in the letter to Mr Mojeed.
The festival organisers said the sessions would examine what it means to lead newsrooms during periods of intense political and social pressure.

According to the programme published by Piauí, Mr Mojeed will speak on Sunday, 6 September, in a session scheduled from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
He will be interviewed on stage by Angélica Santa Cruz of Piauí and Pedro Borges of Alma Preta, a Brazilian publication focused on issues affecting Black communities.
The organisers, writing in the festival programme, noted that PREMIUM TIMES has investigated corruption in government, the social and environmental consequences of the oil industry and police violence.
The organisers also referenced a 2017 invasion of the PREMIUM TIMES newsroom by police operatives following a report about Nigeria’s then-chief of army staff.
Mojeed among global newsroom leaders
Mr Mojeed’s appearance will place him alongside newsroom leaders whose organisations have played key roles in major international investigations and public-interest journalism.
PREMIUM TIMES has actively participated in major international investigations, including the Panama Papers and the Paradise Papers.
The line-up of invited newsroom leaders includes Alan Rusbridger, who served as editor-in-chief of The Guardian from 1995 to 2015; Dean Baquet, executive editor of The New York Times from 2014 to 2022; Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic; Carlos Dada, founder and director of El Faro of El Salvador; Olga Rudenko, editor-in-chief of The Kyiv Independent; Manisha Pande, editorial director of India’s Newslaundry; and Luz Mely Reyes, director-general of Venezuela’s Efecto Cocuyo and a columnist for El País.
The festival will also feature Brazilian journalists and other public intellectuals, including economist Persio Arida.
The event is noteworthy for Piauí as the magazine marks its 20th anniversary. Its organisers describe the publication as a non-profit long-form journalism magazine whose costs are primarily supported by an endowment fund.
The festival’s programme said the gathering would bring together journalists and students from across Brazil, with the international guests discussing their experiences leading newsrooms during difficult periods.
The sessions will be conducted with simultaneous translation, while the interviews will be filmed and subsequently made available online.
The selection of Mr Mojeed follows PREMIUM TIMES’ continued focus on investigative and public-interest journalism in Nigeria, particularly its reporting on corruption, governance, the oil and gas industry, human rights and abuses by security agencies.
