The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Sheriff Oborevwori, has offered funds for medical help to a 13-year-old boy allegedly molested by an uncle.
Mr Oborevwori has also promised to sponsor the boy, identified as Chigozie Ogbu, through school, up to the university level.
The speaker, while on his way back from church service on Sunday, was said to have spotted the boy amongst a crowd of people along the road in Osubi community, Okpe Local Government Area, as the boy’s uncle, Ifeanyi Akpa, was being handed over to the police, according to a news report published by Empire Newspaper.
The speaker is from the Osubi community.
The traumatised boy had bruises all over his body because of the severe beating.
The Empire Newspaper reports that the youth leader in Osubi community, Friday Okpako, handed over the boy’s uncle to the police.
The paper quoted the youth leader as saying that Mr Akpa and his wife refused to sponsor the boy further in school after his primary education and that they were known within the community for frequently molesting him.
The paper said the boy hawked sachet water for the family, apart from doing domestic chores at home.
Mr Oborevwore, after close examination of the boy, ordered him to be taken to the hospital for medical checkup.
The speaker has reportedly directed his foundation, Sheriff Oborevwori Foundation, to prepare the paper works for the scholarship of Master Chigozie.
The speaker’s media aide, Dennis Otu, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES.
He said the speaker on Monday visited Chigozie in a private hospital where he is receiving treatment.
