Former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, has condemned social media reports linking him with bribery allegations against Supreme Court judges.

The State Security Services (SSS), over the weekend arrested seven judges, including two justices of the Supreme Court, in multiple raids across Nigeria. The SSS accused the judges of bribery and corruption.

Mr. Akpabio, who is the Senate Minority Leader, described as “spurious, baseless and false”, a story published on the social media that he bribed Supreme Court judges to swing the 2015 Akwa Ibom governorship election petition in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Udom Emmanuel.

The All Progressives Congress in the state, in February, had asked President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the Supreme Court judgment which declared Mr. Emmanuel winner of the 2015 Akwa Ibom governorship election.

“We wish to state most emphatically that Senator Akpabio is in no way involved in the alleged bribery of Supreme Court judges and so has no reason whatsoever to be scared over the arrest of the Judges,” Mr. Akpabio said on Sunday through a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Anietie Ekong.

The senator, who accused the APC in the state of sponsoring the story against him, said he never had any contact with any judge with the intention to offer bribe. He said he was exploring the option of going to court to protect his reputation.

The senator said it was sad for the APC in Akwa Ibom to celebrate the ordeals of one of the arrested judges of the Supreme Court, Justice Inyang Okoro, who is an indigene of the state, instead of the party to wait for the SSS to conclude its investigations.

He said “in the last few years”  the only time he had contact with Supreme Court justices was in December last year when the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, in which he is the vice chairman, visited the Chief Justice of the Federation and other judges of the apex court.

“Senator Akpabio, as a democrat, believes in the sanctity of the electoral process and so has not been involved in bribing any Judge as it is not in his character to do so. His election as a Senator which was seen as a no contest after a sterling performance as Governor of Akwa Ibom State was widely held as free and fair,” the statement said.

“Senator Akpabio like many other Nigerians learnt of the news of the arrest of the Judges/ Justices on Saturday while he was in Irrua, Edo State when he along with the Senate President and other Senators attended the wedding of the daughter of their colleague, Senator Clifford Ordia.

“It is most disingenuous and reprehensible for Akwa Ibom State APC to attempt to link Senator Akpabio to something he has no knowledge of and impute he was gripped with fear when he was busy celebrating with his colleague on the marriage of his daughter in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government of Edo State.

“We condemn it in very strong terms and advice those whose stock in trade and preoccupation is to link Senator Akpabio to every ignominious scheme to desist from such pull-him-down syndrome.”

The Akwa Ibom state government has also issued a statement condemning similar media reports that linked Governor Emmanuel’s election to bribery.

If they continue investigations, start screaming witch hunt. When they bring evidence, invoke tribalism & regionalism.

If they take you to court, outsource the brief to the Avengers, so that they will blow up more piplines, while IPOB do the break-(up) dance.

Paymaster, don’t jump the gun. The investigation is on going and you will be invited and or arrested with duly executed warrant at the appropriate time if you bribed any of the arrested judges. Relax.

  • Nkem

Once they panic they start singing without any one beating the drum. Akpabio is so corrupt it is hard for him to have walked out of any courtroom without procuring his freedom. The only way he would have continued to walk around as a free man is because of our terribly corrupt judicial system. Like the judgement that restrained EFCC from investigating his state government the other time. But I have always known that, at some point, something has to give.

  • wode

““Senator Akpabio, as a democrat, believes in the sanctity of the electoral process and so has not been involved in bribing any Judge as it is not in his character to do so”

    In deed!

Why the rush to defend self? Since there is nothing to hide or fear, continue living freely until such a time when it would soon get to your own file.

His day will come. I hope I am alive to see this evil fall. If he does not pay here..he will pay in the spirit when he is lowered 6 feet.

You are very correct. The face of a blood sucking wizard.

When death is mention dry bones are always afraid. Why should these persons and Governors be issuing statements if their conscience is not pricking them? The SSS raids were carried out successfully in 7 states across the country including Abujaio should but it was only Gov Wike who assume the responsibility of the Chief Vigilante officer to prevent the SSS from arresting his partner in crime. There have been so many murders, killings and kidnapping in Rivers state under Wike. Has he for once mobilise the police in Rivers to respond to any distress call? The best and most effective way to drastically eliminate corruption is to fight judicial corruption and remove rogue and corrupt judges from the system. Fortunately, no crime is perfect .Human movement from one location and across borders are easily monitored these days. Cash is also the easiest trail to monitor in the 21st Century. It is sickening to see our Judges travelling to Ghana, Benin Republic just to receive bribes to circumvent justices in Nigeria. God will assist us to uproot all these evil people destroying NIGERIA.

Must the axis of evil APC win all the states even against the wish of the citizens of the state?,must every state of Nigeria allow the Edo state type of fraudulent victory of apc for Nigerians to see peace?.who in his right senses will ever believe the lie that APC won elections in akwa ibom and rivers state where the electorate sees APC as evil boko haram islamists.I sometimes wonder how gullible Nigerians can be.was akpabio bribing the judges to secure the victory that the electorate have graciously given him in appreciation of his marvelous earthshaking exploits in AKWA IBOM or for what.if there are people that attempted to hoodwink judges in AKWA IBOM and rivers,it must be APC apologists who wanted to arm twist the citizens and rule them by force.surely this games will never last forever. buhari and his cabals have an expiring date with history. no body is against the fight against corruption, but let it be fought with truth and sincerity.

  • ijelejames

Guilty conscience. They guilty run when no one is chasing them. Mr “corruption/bribery” Akpabio, you can tell that to the winds. Never mind, there is always a payback time. We are watching with interest.

  • wazobia ninja!!!!!!

  • Burbank

Akpabio will even bribe the angels of Hell to be appointed the leader of the condenmned in Hell, with Satan as his deputy !
