A Kano-based Non-Governmental Organisation, Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) has facilitated the release of 2, 000 inmates in Kano State.
The PRAWA state coordinator, Kaltume Mohammed, made the disclosure while briefing journalists in Kano on Tuesday.
She said the organisation has been working in partnership with the Legal Aid Council and other relevant agencies with a view to facilitating the release of prison inmates that spent many years in prison without trial.
The PRAWA Coordinator called on well-to-do persons in the state to support its efforts to ensure expeditious trial of inmates.
She said the call was necessary in view of the number of indigent prisoners who are currently awaiting trial in various prisons in the state.
“These prisoners are from poor families or are poor themselves, so we are calling on wealthy individuals in the state to support us so that we can offer free legal services to such prisoners,”
“We recently discovered a young girl of 15 year who has been in prison for 20 years awaiting trial.
She explained that after discovering the girl who is now 35 years old they decided to take up the case and revisits it with their teams of Provono and paralegal partners.
“The young girl awaiting trial on murder case is one among many who are languishing in prison for several years,” she said.
She, therefore, called on the state government to support the organisation to enable its 21 Provono lawyers in office follow up such cases with a view to reducing congestion in the prisons.
“As it is now we don’t have any funding either from within or from international community but relied on ourselves to carry out the Prison Rehabilitation project and decongestion exercise”, she added.
