The names of housewives and children had been uncovered in staff payroll of a local government, an official has said.
The sole administrator of Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi, Umar Diggi, disclosed this to journalists in Kalgo on Saturday.
He did not, however, disclose the number of the ghost workers and the amount of money involved in the payment.
He decried the situation where staff of the council were involved in putting fictitious names in the payroll when government was doing it best to find jobs for qualified people.
Mr. Diggi said that such actions had deprived the council of providing relevant social facilities, stressing that efforts would be intensified to end the fraud.
He, however, appealed to people to support efforts made to enhance employment of qualified citizens for the socio-economic development of the local government.
He said the amount recovered from the fictitious workers would be ploughed back into funds for provision of basic amenities to the populace.
He reiterated his resolve to improve healthcare delivery, education, water supply, environmental protection and transport sectors for development of the area council.
