The Governor of Katsina state, Aminu Masari, on Wednesday said his state lacks qualified teachers in two key subjects: English and Mathematics.
Speaking at a press conference bat the headquarters of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund TETfund in Abuja, Mr. Masari pleaded with the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Suleiman Bogoro, to intervene in the training of quality teachers in the state.
“We want to restore the lost glory of the state in the education sector,” he said. “If we can give our children the right education, then we can go to sleep.”
Mr. Masari asked TETfund to intervene in three sectors: provision of infrastructure, training; and capacity building.
He explained that by doing this, TETFUND would be taking pressure off the state government and that the government would then have more funds for primary and secondary education.
He noted that if capacities of its lecturers are improved, the College of Education in Katsina could start to produce Bachelors and Masters degrees holders in education.
“We have a College of Education that is over 20 years and is still producing NCE,” Mr. Masari said. “It shows clearly there is lack of capacity of the lecturers themselves and the infrastructure at the institution. This is where we want the Fund to intervene.”
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of TETfund, Suleiman Bogoro, assured the governor that the Fund would assist the state in its areas of need.
“I promise that at TETfund, we will play our role at the tertiary level, so that government can divert its resources to the foundation, that’s the basic education,” he said.
