There was large turnout of women voters across the 23 local governments of Sokoto State for the presidential and parliamentary elections, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Sokoto is also the home state of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, who was accredited for the Presidential and National Assembly elections about 11:14 a.m. at Tambuwal-Gari polling unit, Tambuwal Local Government Area.

Mr. Tambuwal’s main challenger in April’s governorship election in the state, Abdullah Wali, was also accredited at about 10:25 a.m. at unit 5, Sanyinna, Tambuwal Local Government Area.

However, there were hitches following the failure of card readers to recognise thumb prints of some of the voters in parts of the state.

Shehu Umar, the Chief Orientation and Mobilisation Officer, National Orientation Agency, NOA, Tangaza Local Government Area, commended INEC for the successful take off of the exercise.

Sahabi Gidan-Madi, the Chairman, Tangaza Local Government Area, also expressed satisfaction with arrangements made by INEC for the polls.

“Everything is going on smoothly in the polling centres but for the problems with the card readers,’’ he said.

In Rabah Local Government Area, the Electoral Officer, Sama’ila Aliero, said the card readers were working perfectly.

The chairman of Wurno Local Government Area, Shehu Chacho, also expressed happiness with the arrangements made by INEC and security agencies.
