The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, on Tuesday announced his running mate ahead of the 2015 poll.
She is 54-year-old Yetunde Abosede Onanuga, a senior civil servant in Lagos State.
She holds a Higher National Diploma, HND, in Business administration from Lagos College of Science of Technology, now Lagos State Polytechnic, and also obtained an MBA from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.
The governor said he found her competent and worthy.
Mr. Amosun charged her to be conscious of the interest of the people and the state, as a whole. He said that governance is about good performances and delivery of democracy to the people.
Speaking with journalists during an interview, the running mate said she was pleased as she had been nursing an ambition to become deputy governor.
“I want to thank the almighty God for making today possible. It is a day of joy to me, it’s a day the Lord has made and I am rejoicing in it. I have looked forward to this day because I remember four years ago, I came out, I wanted this position of the deputy governor, but as God would have it, the day he has made, this is the day”, she said.
“And I’m so happy that I actually emerged the running mate of our dear governor”.
She also spoke about her ancestral background. She said her father is from Aparaki in Ijebu-Igbo under Ijebu North local government, while her mother is from Akaka.
“I’m also married to a son of Ijebu Ode, Otunba Abiodun Onanuga.
“I hold a HND in Business Administration from the Lagos State Science and Technology, Isolo, Lagos. Also I have a TTC which is Technical Teacher certificate from the Federal Technical College, a Master degree from the Ogun State University now Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye”,she added.
Mrs. Onanuga announced her loyalty to the governor saying, “There is no doubt before somebody can emerge, that person must have been a bit loyal. But on emergence, that loyalty has to be in full. Now that I’ve emerged, I want to be loyal to the people, loyal to my governor, loyal to the elders and to the youth, women and all members of Ogun State”.
She said he post of deputy governor is key.
“I don’t agree Deputy Governors are spare tyres, they are help mates. They are to assist the governor in achieving his aim. Our governor is very strong and so must the deputy be somebody that would help him to achieve his aim. And I know the aim of our governor for this state. It’s to make the state a state that people would look up and that is what I intend to do; to help him in all areas to achieve his goal.
“I agree that deputy governors should be given portfolio and this depends on what my governor decides to do. If he decides or otherwise, I will take my position, I will work assiduously to achieve my aim in that state”.
Mrs. Onanuga said she worked as the Director of Finance and Administration in Lagos State.
