The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has cautioned politicians against using innocent
children as political thugs.
He gave the advice on Monday in Sokoto when he received the newly elected members of the PDP working committee in the state who paid him a courtesy call.
“Politicians who give money and drugs to other peoples’ children in order to use them as thugs are doing the greatest harm for themselves, the society and the country at large.
“Such children will turn against the elected officials after the elections and they often make governance difficult for their
sponsors,” he said.
He urged leaders of political parties and other Nigerians ensure that the country is peaceful and united.
“We are yearning for free, fair and acceptable polls in 2015 and beyond.
“As leaders, we should all give attention to the upliftment of the welfare, comfort and security of Nigerians,” the Sultan, said.
Mr. Abubakar said the Sultanate council was founded on the principles of honesty, accountability and social justice.
“These are what we still stand for in the Sultanate council of Sokoto in line with the foundation laid for us since the defunct Sokoto Caliphate over 200 years ago,” he added.
The Sultan promised that all the political parties in the state would have free access to his palace.
“Our doors are open to all of you and we will continue to pray fervently for sustainable democracy, peace and unity in Nigeria,” he said.
In his response, Ibrahim Milgoma, the state chairman of the PDP, said members of the committee visited the sultan to seek his fatherly prayer, support and royal advice.
He promised that the leadership and members of the PDP in the state and Nigeria would be law abiding and patriotic.
He said that the party would ensure that the people of the state enjoy credible leadership and good governance.
