Kano youth burn red caps in support of Shekarau

The youths say they are disappointed in Kwankwaso.

Some youth who claim to be supporters of a former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, gathered on Friday, in Tudun Wada area of Kano, to burn red caps.

The gathering tagged “Bukin kona jan hula,” meaning party to burn red caps, was intended to show that they are not in support of the present administration of Rabiu Kwankwaso, whose supporters are known to wear red caps.

The youth chanted “Ba mayi,” meaning “We don’t want,” danced, and burnt red caps and brooms.
The broom is the APC’s official logo and Mr. Kwankwaso last year joined the APC.

One of the youth, Mamuda Amadu, told PREMIUM TIMES that they were showing their support for former Governor Shekarau.

“We are not going to do PDP and we will never be part of Kwankwaso. We are burning red caps to show that we are not part of any red cap.” Mr. Amadu said.

He also said the brooms they burnt signified their hatred for APC.
Mr. Amadu, however, said that Mr. Shekarau did not ask them to convene the gathering.

“We are doing this out of our own will and showing the present government that we are not in support of their administration and that we will stick to Shekarau,” he said.

Mr. Shekarau decamped to the PDP from APC alongside former governor of Sokoto, Attahiru Bafarawa, in February. Since then the political atmosphere in Kano has become tense. Supporters of the former governor and the present one, from time to time, engage in public bickering in Kano.

Mr. Amadu said the youth had a great time and a great day without any interference from either the government or security operatives.

He also said the next “Bukin kona jan hula” will be a bigger one.
“We intend to host it in the stadium towards the end of this year,” he said.
