N1.02 billion was used to pay the pension arrears.
The Sokoto State Government on Wednesday commenced the payment of N1.02 billion arrears of pension and gratuities of 920 retired, contract, and deceased staff.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the payment was inaugurated by Governor Aliyu Wamakko.
Mr. Wamakko, represented by the Commissioner for Rural Development, Abdullahi Maigwandu, said the payment would be carried out in four batches and end in October.
The governor said the gesture would alleviate the sufferings of the beneficiaries, including the families of the deceased workers.
“The state government is fully committed to the welfare of the workers; serving, retired and dead workers,’’ he said.
The Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Musa Abdullahi, in a speech, urged the beneficiaries to use the money judiciously.
`I also want to caution you against fraudsters and sundry criminals as this money is your lifeline,’’ Mr. Abdullahi said.
Two beneficiaries, Cosman Emeagi and Abubakar Mode Dogon-Daji, commended the state government for the gesture.
