Checks in Dutse on Tuesday showed that a big tuber of yam now goes for N500 against N250 last month, while the price of medium size yam has gone up from N200 to N400.
A measure of Irish potato that sold for N350 last month has risen to N700.
Some of the consumers expressed surprise at the sudden rise in the price of the commodities.
Maryam Shuaibu said that she could no longer buy yam because of the price increase.
Mrs. Shuaibu said yams and Irish potatoes had become foods for the rich as a result of the price increase.
Ahmed sani, another consumer, described the new price of yams as outrageous, saying she could no longer afford the item.
Auwalu Saminu, a yam and Irish potato seller, decried the current low patronage and expressed optimism that the price would soon come down.
