About 500 households set to be affected by flood in Benue have refused to change relocate, an official has said.

The Benue State Flood Committee said it identified no fewer than 500 households that might be affected by flooding in 2016.

The committee Chairman, Emmanuel Manger, told journalists on Monday in Makurdi that the government had effectively educated the masses on what to do during the expected flooding.

He said the government had also issued vacation notices to the households to be affected, adding however, that many of them had refused to comply with the notices.

“As a government, we have sensitised the public on the forthcoming flooding and told them what to do before hand.

“Even though we have notified the houses to be affected to vacate such houses; many of them have refused to comply with our notices.

“Unfortunately, there is little we can do because we cannot force them out of their houses. We have done all the needful,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the state was one of the worst-hit in the 2012 major flood disaster that affected over 12,000 persons prominent among which were children and women.
