At least 15 people were reportedly killed and several others injured in Kwata area of Zawan, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, Sunday night, following attack by gunmen.

Residents of the area told PREMIUM TIMES that the unidentified gunmen attacked the people in the night.

A witness, Paul Dapam, said, “as we speak, I am aware of 15 people that were killed”.

Another witness said the attack began around 8:30pm and ended at midnight.

He said a security van belonging to the Special Taskforce on Jos Crisis, known as “Operation Safe Haven”, visited the scene at night.

The owner of one of the IDP camps sheltering displaced persons from the North East, Mark Lipdo, also confirmed the attack and the killing of 15 people.

“We received information last night that gunmen attacked Kwata in Zawan district of Jos South LGA, Plateau State. Fifteen people were shot dead, other casualties not yet ascertained,” he told our reporter.

The spokesman of the “Operation Safe Haven”, Ikedichi Iweha, a captain in the Nigerian Army, did not respond to our reporter’s call.

The police spokesperson in the state, Abuh Emmanuel, however said he was yet to be informed of the attack.

“I have not been informed of the incident you are talking about. I will contact our Divisional Police Officer of the area for details,” he said.
