Tuesday’s election for the Plateau State speakership slot was not concluded as the Governor of the State, Simon Lalong, directed that the elections be suspended due to a controversy that was likely to disrupt the polls.
In the letter that was read to the legislators by the clerk of the House, the Governor said the suspension of the election was due to “security threats”.
The contest for the speakership was between a former speaker of the State Assembly, Istifanus Mwansat, of the Peoples Democratic Party, who represents Pankshin South, and an All Progressive Congress member representing Jos North West, Peter Azi.
During the first round of the elections, both contestants got 12 votes each as the Plateau State House of Assembly has 24 members from the 17 council areas of the state.
Since the Peoples Democratic Party has 13 out of the 24 members in the state assembly, one of the PDP members must have voted for the APC candidate.
Out of the 24 members of the immediate past Plateau state legislators, only 3 were re-elected in the state assembly, while 21 others were fresh members elected.
Here is comprehensive list of the 8th Assembly members in Plateau state.
