A security official keeping watch over elections at Abanashehu polling unit in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau state has shot dead a voter at the unit, sources around the vicinity of the incidence have told PREMIUM TIMES.
The spokesperson for the Plateau state command of the Nigeria Police, Abuh Emmanuel, confirmed the incident, but declined to disclose the identity of the suspected killer or the security agency to which he belongs.
The spokesman of the Special Task Force on Jos crisis (STF), Ikedichi Iweha, also confirmed the development in a telephone interview with journalists in Jos.
Details of how the victim was killed are sketchy at this time but the incident sparked panic in the vicinity of the polling unit as voters and some officials scampered away for fear the situation might degenerate to violent protests.
The remains of the victim, identified simply as “Mr. Salim” is said to be laying at the scene of the incident as at the time of this report.
Earlier, security officials had averted violence at Pajat Ward of Langtang North Local Government Area of the state, when supporters of two political parties clashed during accreditation of voters.
