The residents of Dum, Rachit and Dyang villages of Bachit District in Riyom Local Government Area of northern Plateau state said unknown gunmen, suspected to be Fulanis, attacked the communities, early hours of Friday, killing 12 people.
Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson, Plateau State, Abuh Emmanuel, in a telephone interview, said he could not comment on the casualty figure.
“I am yet to get details from our Divisional Officer in Riyom, but once I’m finished with the details, I will let you know, but at the moment I cannot tell you the number of persons involved in the attack,” he said.
A resident of the area, Pius Pam, in a telephone interview, told PREMIUM TIMES that the attack was one of the worst in recent times.
“12 people were killed from the villages mentioned. Others were injured, with a few houses burnt. We wonder why the attacks are coming at this time. We thought they were over,” he said.
It was gathered the suspected attackers had attacked Jol, a nearby village last week, but did not kill any one.
They however took away domestic animals and destroyed farm produce.
