Governor Kashim Shettima on Saturday retained control of the All Progressives Congress (APC), structure in Borno State.
The governor’s close associates and preferred candidates were elected into the state executives of the APC at a congress conducted by officials from the national headquarters of the party and monitored by officials from Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).
Ali Dalori, a staunch loyalist of Mr Shettima was returned as state chairman of the party.
Others, such Bello Ayuba, Mohammed Babandoki and Fati Kakinna who are amongst other key supporters of the governor were also reelected as well as state secretary, youth leader and women leader.
In all, 37 officials were elected to run the affairs of the APC in the state.
Mr Shettima’s key loyalists were also elected as executive officials in each of the 27 local government areas and the 312 wards of the state in the last two weeks.
Saturday’s state congress took place at the Elkanemi Sports Centre in Maiduguri.
Apart from the delegates, those who attended the congress include members of the APC Board of Trustees, past and serving Senators, House of Representatives members, State Assembly members, past and serving public office holders at the national and state levels.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that a consensus was reached earlier which saw other aspirants voluntarily stepping down for the governor’s preferred candidates.
A former speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Zanna Zakariyya, who served as chairman of the congress committee from the APC national headquarters, listed the names of candidates who had indicated interests for various positions before he “repeatedly asked in different languages if there was any aspirant who was interested in contesting any seat to come forward,” one of the delegates who attended the congress said.
“There was no objection, therefore, officials of the congress read the APC guidelines and constitution which required affirmation of all consensus candidates by delegates,” the delegate who declined to be named because he was not permitted to speak to the press said.
The APC state executives were reelected after affirmation by delegates for a term of four years.
After the congress, top officials and members of the party in the state accompanied Mr Shettima to his residence “in celebratory mood congratulating him for reaffirming his control of the APC at the State, local government and ward levels”.
There predictions that the return of former Governor Ali Sheriff to the APC three weeks ago would threaten Mr Shettima’s control of the APC prior to the congresses and ahead of the 2019 general elections.
