The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday arraigned a former member of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Zenaib Alman, on a three-count charge of obtaining N13 million naira by false pretence.
Ms. Alman, who represented Kaltungo West in the house, was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Gombe.
She allegedly took the money from her former husband, Gambo Hamza, whom she recently divorced.
Mr. Hamza said the former lawmaker was his wife when the alleged fraud occurred.
He said his then wife told him the money would be used to finance a contract she got from Gombe state government, with a promise to repay with interest after completion of the contract, and payment for it.
Ms. Alman, a popular female politician in the state, denied the allegation and said her former husband made up the story.
She said there was no such a contract in the first place, and added that the money was given to her to assist her finance her House of Assembly election campaign, which she eventually lost.
She pleaded not guilty on all counts presented by the state counsel.
The judge, Mohammed Umar, remanded the former lawmaker until her counsel, Irimiya Yohanna, perfected her bail.
The court adjourned the case till 12 October for trial.
