A bill for the establishment of North East Development Commission passed second reading at the House of Representatives on Monday.
The bill was first presented in November.
It was sponsored by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who stepped down from the Chair to lead debate on the bill today.
The bill seeks to charge the proposed commission with the responsibility to “receive and manage funds from allocation from the federation account and international donors for the settlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, houses, and business premises of victims of insurgency; and for other matters connected therewith”.
According to Mr. Dogara, thousands of citizens had been killed, while over 2.2 million people were displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the North East.
The Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, stressed the importance of the establishment of the commission, saying “the best compensation for the people of the North East is this commission”.
Also speaking, Minority Leader, Leo Igor, urged the speedy passage of the bill.
Following unanimous support for the bill through voice vote, Mr. Lasun ruled that the bill be referred to committees on Internally Displaced Persons, Refugees and North East Initiative.
Earlier on August 12, the House had passed a resolution, asking President Muhammad Buhari to establish a development commission for the areas affected by insurgency.
The August 12 resolution followed a motion by 88 lawmakers led by Mr. Dogara.
