There was unease at the Adamawa state House of Assembly complex, Yola, during Monday’s plenary as the speaker, Ahmadu Fintiri, scuttled an attempt by a group of lawmakers to impeach him.

Mr. Fintiri, who had spearheaded the impeachment of the former state Governor, Murtala Nyako, has been at daggers-drawn with the state governor, James Ngilari, and some lawmakers who see him as a traitor that failed to secure return tickets for them during the controversial primaries in Abuja.

Recently, there was conflict between the executive and the legislative following an acerbic advertorial in which Mr. Ngilari purportedly accused President Goodluck Jonathan of betraying him.

A similar advertorial ran accusing the embattled speaker of betraying his political godfathers including former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and Mr. Nyako.

During Monday’s sitting, the speaker escaped the impeachment plot by the whiskers as the perceived sponsors of the plot, Majority Leader, Salihu Kabilo, and Jerry Kundusi, the chief whip, were hurriedly removed from their positions.

Mr. Kabilo was replaced by the speaker’s loyalist and former majority leader, Ishaku Bala, while Aminu Abbas took over from Mr. Kundusi.

Subsequently, the speaker who presided over the sitting re-constituted the local government probe committee.

Our correspondent said there was heightened security at the state Assembly while Mr. Fintiri’s antagonists had planned to stage street celebrations in the event of the impeachment.
