APC youth vandalise, torch PDP campaign office as Buhari visits Maiduguri

FILE PHOTO: APC Youth Destroying PDP Billboards in Borno

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Borno State, vandalised and torched several campaign offices and posters of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Monday, during the party’s presidential campaign rally in Borno.

The APC supporters, who took to the streets of Maiduguri in their thousands, chanted pro- Muhammadu Buhari campaign slogans while carrying an effigy of the PDP.

While soldiers were battling to control the mammoth crowd at the venue of the campaign rally, some of the irate youth were seen bringing down PDP billboards that were mounted close to the venue of the rally.

Hours later, thick smoke was seen some 500 meters way from the venue of the rally as the APC youth stormed a major campaign office of the PDP, popularly known as UTC.

Witnesses at the scene said hundreds of the APC supporters, chanting anti-PDP and anti-President Goodluck Jonathan slogans, stormed the PDP office armed with petrol jars, forced themselves into the premises and set the place ablaze.

All efforts by police officers stationed at the UTC to prevent the youth failed as they were overwhelmed by the mob.

A police officer who spoke to journalists in front of the burnt office said, “We tried everything in our powers as permitted of us during riots to stop them, but the young men came in their hundreds and our men had to retreat because we do not intend to use excess force to stop them. It was really very sad.”

Reacting to the attack in a written statement, Inuwa Bwala, the spokesperson, campaign committee of the Borno
State PDP governorship ‎ candidate, Muhammad Imam, said the act was highly condemnable and unprovoked.

“The Muhammed Imam governorship Campaign Organisation condemns the unprovoked attack on PDP supporters and property in Maiduguri by APC hoodlums,” Mr. Bwala said. “We equally condemn the attack on military personnel by hired thugs, ostensibly acting out the script of the Borno State government. We commiserate with the victims of the attack and caution the Borno state Governor, Kashim Shettima, who seems to take delight in causing mischief anytime the PDP plans its programmes within the state.

“While we call on all supporters of Muhammad Imam to remain calm and lawful in the face of such unprovoked attacks, we wish to assure our citizens that no act of desperation nor violence can alter the will of God. ‎We remain focused on the mission of rescuing Borno from the clutches of an inept and corrupt leadership.

“We leave it to the security agencies to investigate the Maiduguri mayhem perpetrated in the name of hosting a presidential candidate. One wonders how the same Buhari visited Baylesa in peace but Shettima has turned Borno into a vortex of violence and political nihilism.”

I just came in from Warri and driving round the city, you could see the billboards of Buhari side by side with that of President GEJ and APC are campaigning without anyone molesting anybody.

ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU WAS VERY RIGHT WHEN HE DESCRIBED BUHARI AS AN AGENT OF DESTABILIZATION

Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State and leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, described General Muhammadu Buhari as an agent of destabilization, ethnic bigot and religious fanatic who if given the
chance would ensure the disintegration of the country, according to a Wikileaks transcript of a conversation between Tinubu and the US consul-general in 2003.

Tinubu disclosed this to the United States spy posing as the consul general – in a 2003 conversation- that Buhari should not be trusted due to his bigot tendencies. He pointed to Buhari’s tribalistic nature as potentially dangerous to the unity of Nigeria. In Tinubu’s summation, he stated: ‘Buhari and his ilk are agents of destabilization who would be far worse than Obasanjo.’ The conversation was recorded by the US Consul General and wired back to Washington DC for analysis. Of which, Wikileaks got a hold of the recorded transcripts and published the conversation.

Section 6 (C) reads “ …….. Moreover, Obasanjo is the only candidate who stands a chance of blocking his rival, General Muhammadu Buhari, whose ethnocentrism would jeopardize Nigeria’s national unity. Buhari and his ilk are agents of destabilization who would be far worse than Obasanjo”

Buhari has violence written on his head. He has not even lost yet and his urchins are already going on rampage

  • tsunami1earthquake

This is the height of irresponsibility. What these youth did can never be justified with any form of reasoning. An APC presidential candidate visits on a campaign, people begin to vandalize and destroy property belonging to another political party! If this is not election violence then I wonder what it could be called; and this is a party that was party to an Accord sometime ago. People might argue that the APC had no hand in this shameful event but that would be an otiose form of argument because, these property had not been destroyed before the present APC campaign in this place. Why did these youth not carry out this destruction before this campaign visit, a day, a week, a month earlier on? So the only conclusion is that the destruction happened because of the campaign visit, and is attributable to the campaign visit of the APC.

Again, as I have said sometime ago on another forum, caution is really needed in participating in this election. It would be something idiotic for any aspiring political party to precipitate a violence that could eventually lead to further postponement of this election or even no election at all.

And, should this election hold as scheduled, all political parties must also prepare their minds for a possible loss at the polls. It is just trite knowledge that all the parties cannot win the presidential election; no one needs to be a rocket scientist to understand this. And, should a party lose, we do hope the whole nation would not turn to a conflagration.

  • eduetok

    Change indeed!

  • the truth

This is the change. My people brace up for this kind of blood letting and violence, a situation where they don’t recognize opposition, we are going back to 1983. My people this is what they meant when theysaid they would make nigeria ungovernable

  • Change4nigeria

I’m not a supporter of violent act or do i clamour for it… CHANGE IS INEVITABLE!! It’s like a flood that roars .

  • Godfrey Etokebe

The story filtering out from Maiduguri is that the youths refused BUHARI to make any statement. This implies that they do not want to listen to Buhari. Is that how you treat someone that you want to lead you? You do not listen to Your leader? I sincerely think that the People of BORNO STATE and MAIDUGURI have rejected BUHARI and APC, hence ,the vandalism by a few DIE HARD MISCREANTS that are still left in APC!!!!

    • Maitama Tambari

You are day light dreaming. If a Northerner tells you that you do not need to speak, is out of respect., Etokebe Godfrey. You are backward in traditional culture because you sound to be from Akwa Ibom or Cross Rivers, but this culture is prominently in Hausa/Kanuri and Yoruba /Benin cultures, to respect elders by telling them to save their saliva, the mission has already been accepted by the people. This is the position of Maiduguri youth which you negatively misconstrued, but it was 100% respect to GMB. Godfrey, GMB was a former Military Governor in the old Borno State who was respected by the parents of these youth. CHANGE! YES WE CAN.

      • Godfrey Etokebe

Are you telling me that vandalism is a SHOW of ELDERLY RESPECT in Hausa/Kanuri and Yoruba /Benin cultures? Destruction of the televison crew Equipments is also a SHOW of ELDERLY RESPECT in Hausa/Kanuri and Yoruba /Benin cultures? Then, why did APC bothered to set up the loudspeakers and the television coverage if BUHARI pre-emptively was not suppose to address his purported supporters?
VOTE GEJ and PDP for sustainable TRANSORMATION of NIGERIA!!!!!

      • jack

        Buhari is evil pls

      • emmanuel

Let them respect him for all I care. He shalp face disrespect when he looses again.

        Numbers don’t lie.

  • ConScience

There is no need for this pointless violence be it APC or PDP regardless of the cause. The people will speak with their votes when the FG finally permits elections to take place. Please speak louder with your electoral vote. If you want to continue what you have experienced the past 16 years then vote for the incumbent party PDP but if you feel you need to change course and try something different then vote APC. And if they both do not satisfy your quest for true leadership then vote for one of the minority parties as that is the power of democracy. Hang in there all. You will speak louder at the polls come March 28th.

  • Uzoma John

It is unfortunate that when young people due to outburst of emotions go on rampage, these PDP guys start accusing APC. In 2011 elections, GEJ was heralded wherever he went, be it north or south. The question is, what has changed since then? GEJ and PDP betrayed the Nigerian youths who felt he was to represent them, rather he joined forces with the vultures to impoverish them. Rather than give them meaningful livelihood, he bequeathed them with suffering, death and sorrow. I feel their pain. I would advice they don’t go on rampage but rather remain calm since change is nigh. They should not drag GMB’s name into this. I understand how quick they need this change and chase these blood suckers away. They should tarry and remain calm while we all work towards a Nigeria of our dream via GMB.

    • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Justifying violence and supporting evil but still claim Christianity…… Na waooo

    • TeamObed

You mean GEJ was heralded in the north yet Buhari got 12million votes in the north?

How many votes did Buhari got when he contested against Ya’adua?

These fanatics will always support their own irrespective of party.

      • Uzoma John

You can see that you reason like those you are supporting- GEJ and PDP. The youths are disappointed in you people for killing their dreams and keeping them in a perpetual state of hopelessness. Tell me who stoned or booed GEJ in 2011 when he campigned? Over to you, crumb eater.

  • bomani

These northerners are ANIMALS.. It has nothingto do with pain inflicted from Boko Haram.. they have always been animals even before boko existed

    • ConScience

Wow!!! Wow!!! Wow!!! That is getting to the crux of the issue now. Why do people like you carelessly toss out comments that may incite public hatred. How many northerners do you know or how many have you lived amongst for you to pretty much cast them all as Animals. Be careful because I am sure sitting in the confines of my Lagos home I cannot label all your kinsmen as similar to you even if I knew where you were from. Youth being angry should not be taken to mean that it is now an ethnic thing. When the Niger Delta youth were angry and expressed themselves they were met with amnesty and counter proposal for better equity of ‘their’ oil wealth. Maybe it is high time one listened to what this so called Animals (as you so harshly termed) want or desire. That is the beauty of democracy where someone like you without the fear of being traced since Nigeria does not have an intelligent IP subnet tracking system can rudely label a whole geo-social group of people derogatorily.

      • emmanuel

Comment imcite more than the burnings?

How easy you think you can cow people to keep quiet. May be what he should do is unleash violence too before you understand the anger welling up in people already against the carnage carried out in the North and suoervised by their elites.

Violence can not be excused in any shape or form but we must all stand and condemn violence whatever it rears it murderous head in any part of Nigeria. We are all living witnesses to the spate of violence PDP in Rivers state have unleashed on APC. It is so bad that the APC can not even campaign in Okirika and it’s environs on the orders of the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan. People like you have remained silent as the police have even duly informed APC that it can not provide them protection. PDP is not just violent but a murderous party. Remember late Sunday Awoniyi? IS THIS THE CHANGE APC IS PREACHING? IS THIS WHAT THEY WANT TO TURN OUR POLITY TO? WHY HAS OUR YOUTHS AGREED TO BE USED AS A TOOL FOR DESTRUCTION? IS THIS THE KIND OF PRECEDENCE WE SHOULD BE SETTING FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION? WHAT HAS APC DONE OR WHAT ARE THEY DOING TOWARDS CURBING THIS MENACE THAT IS FOLLOWING THEM? NIGERIANS ARE WATCHING. AND NOW WE KNOW THE KIND OF PARTY THAT APC TRUELY IS. DO NOT BE USED AS AN AGENT FOR DESTRUCTION, THAT IS NOT THE CHANGE WE SEEK. DO THE RIGHT THING, SUPPORT THE GEJ/SAMBO CAMPAIGN, VOTE WISELY, VOTE GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN.. MARCH ON FOR GEJ #GEJ4NAIJA

  • korona melvin

DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTIES IS A VERY UGLY TREND AND SHOULD BE CONDEMNED IN TOTALITY. ELECTION IS NOT A WAR. SUPPORT THE PEACEFUL MOVEMENT. VOTE GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN FOR CONTINUITY OF THE TRANSFORMATION AGENDA THAT HAS STARTED ALREADY #GEJ2015 #GEJ4NAIJA

I believe after you have seen this you will know how prepared is APC, to destroy the life and property of Nigerians all in the name of Power and the quest to be PRESIDENT by all means, may God save Nigeria from the hands of APC and the terrors of our land #GEJ4NAIJA #No2Buhari

  • Every chance the APC get, they change our peaceful environment to a violent one, they change our love-filled society to a chaotic society. We don’t need a retrogressive change that supports and sponsors all manner of rancour and tumult. We say NO to negative change and YES to positive transformation. #No2Buhari #GEJ4Naija

  • Atinuke

Don’t blame them, they were merely following in their father’s footsteps of destruction. It is all they know, it is the only thing they know how to do, My concern is for their southern supporters who have been blinded from seeing APC’s true nature. #NO2Bihari #GEJ4Naija

  • All in the name of Change!!…But is it that the press in Nigeria are blind or they are just been biased.. How come Buhari hasnt been called to a panel to explain all these violent happenings…Spmething is wrong somewere…Nigerians need to be alert, because APC is trying to do something funny..Its left for we Nigerians to stand against it or we will eventually be left with regrets and self-condemnation. i just pray its nt too late, lets just stick with GEJ and tolerate him in some aspects, A nation can never have a perfect leader, coz nobody is perfect except God. Buhari is a wrong choice for Nigeria…..#NO2Buhari

  • jamesbourne

This is absolutely preposterous of them, is this how they campaign for an election? am astonished by their violent act, so when Nigerians decides to vote you should remember this act of violence which we don’t need in our country at the moment and have a rethink, which is when you do vote for him maybe your house would be the next they vandalise for him? so lets advocate for continuity with #GEJ is the only way forward. VOTE IN GEJ FOR CONTINUITY.

    • Ibrahim M

It is typical of them really. They are very violent. #NO2Buhari

      • jamesbourne

yes sir you are on the winning team #gej4naija

  • Atinuke

The funny thing is that GEJ has come out to openly caution his supporters from the act of violence in campaign but I have not heard anything from buhari cautioning his overenthusiastic supporters, does this mean he approves these kind of acts? Come to think of it, he never condemned the killings and violence that succeeded the 2011 election. #NO2Buhari GEJ4Naija

Goodluck and Buhari are both men of great influence. Under Goodluck, youths are starting up news businesses and companies and as a result, create jobs and help Nigerians, under Buhari youths kill their neighbours, destroy the properties of investors, business owners and job providers. Who would u prefer to follow. Vote up for Goodluck, share for Buhari. #GEJ4Naija #NO2Buhari

AFTER SIGNING THE PEACE ACCORD IN JANUARY I WONDER WHY THE APC WILL NOT SENSITIZE THEIR SUPPORTERS ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS OF VANDALIZING THE OPPOSITIONS SIGNPOST, WELL THIS IS A PARTY KNOWN FOR VIOLENCE SO WE SHOULD’NT THINK OF GIVING THEM ANY OPPORTUNITY AT ALL…… #GEJ4NAIJA

  • Ibrahim M

Why are APC and their supporters always violent? Why? We don’t need this for the good of our safety, peace, democracy and unity. #NO2Buhari

  • bello audu

This is the change. My people brace up for this kind of blood letting

Violence has become APC’s theme song and this saddens every Nigerian. #NO2Buhari #GEJ4Naija

  • habibmohamood

the thought of violence during this election is really sad, whatever happened to free and fair elections without violence???and to openly come out and accuse the gov of the state is outrageous .if Buhari cannot tame his supporters during a rally then i don’t know how he will do when the actual elections Come…this is not the kind of change we want.. #GEJ4NAIJA

  • Madam Lauretta

THE APC HAS SHOWN THAT THEY ARE OUT FOR A DO OR DIE POLITICS. IT IS VERY SAD, THIS IS THE HIGHEST FORM OF INTIMIDATION AND THUGGERY. I ADVISE ALL WELL MEANING NIGERIANS ESPECIALLY THE YOUTHS TO TOW THE PATH OF PEACE. VOTE JONATHAN PEACEFULLY AND SAY NO TO VIOLENCE AND A BIGGER NO TO BUHARI

  • umar shehu

Am sure the BUHARI himself is being used, what a shame. May God help you and your sender, but you are nothing before our God, so you and your sender are just joking. #GEJ4NAIJA

How come I am yet to hear calls for IGP, SSS, military, ICC and every other agency to arrest Governor Shettima of Bornu State for this riot and wanton destruction of properties of opposition party by APC??? I even learnt that some people died?!!!

How come the IGP is yet to set up high-powered investiagation panel to unravel the source and scourge of APC unprovoked attack on PDP and President Jonathan campaign in Maiduguri???

Which of these two events preceded the other and is it proper to say that ‘Okrika’ could have been a reaction to an earlier ‘Maiduguri’???!

I had said before that whenever an issue is against Jonathan or PDP, emergency commentators flourish on Classic FM and other stations (like the ones Cheta holds sway from 7.30 a.m.), but APC is guilty (big time, and as mostly so), what we hear is a conspired hush!!!

But many Nigerians who are guilty of these conspiracy conveniently forget one very crucial thing – that power belongs to God and HE (God) is not a democrat, because HE (God) gives it to whoever HE decides to at anytime ‘T’, irrespective of what men say or think?!!!

    • Aisha Mammud

I wonder what the police is doing! This action of APC touts would have risen serious concerns and alarm in Nigeria had it been carried out by the PDP people. Few people speak when APC members and their followers act folly but but anything about Jonathan becomes a national discuss. God help Jonathan!

LETS MIVE FORWARD NIGERIA, GEJ is the only way.

Labour or Trade unionism in Nigeria is crying out for Intelligent Leadership. It is so blindingly obvious that
their current crop of leadership haven’t the slightest clue of the immense clout, muscle, and potential financial resources at their disposal to exploit and deploy to regain and sustain their lost glory.
Imagine the reward, if the leadership spend half the time wasted on chasing political patronage, to embark
on even the single initiative of ensuring every Nigerian worker both in private and public sectors and regardless of cadre, has a legally binding, written contract of employment that guarantees among others:
employee’s right to paid annual and maternity leave; safeguards employee’s rights constructive and other forms of unfair dismissal; guarantees health and safety at work; secures interest on late payment of employees’ salaries and wages; paid medical leave and treatment of employees; paid over time; and directly address all the abuses and indignities that the Nigerian employer routinely inflict on the Nigerian employee – especially foreign employers in Nigeria like the Chinese and Lebanese?
There is no doubting the membership recruitment drive of such an initiative and with it, millions of naira in
membership fees taken directly at source or member’s pay slip. Financial stability – if membership fees are
not embezzled!!!!- would free up the leadership to take on the government and progressively improve the sad lot of the Nigerian employee. Thanks for this article, madam.
