An explosion in Lugda Village in Maiha Local Government of Adamawa State has killed one person and injured two others.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt that a substance believed to be an improvised explosive device went off at about 6:30 a.m. when some residents of the village gathered around a small fire to warm their bodies. One of the residents saw a polythene bag that had something in it. Without checking the content, the resident reportedly threw the substance into the fire to serve as some kind of fuel.

As soon as he dropped it into the fire, a loud explosion occurred, causing particles to shatter over residents gathered there. One person was killed while the injured were rushed to the hospital.

Confirming the incident, the Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar, said the residents may have acted out of ignorance of the content of the polythene bag.

He said investigations were ongoing and charged members of the public to be more vigilant and to avoid handling anything strange to them
