A lecturer at the Taraba College of Education (COE) Zing, Kassimu Umar, was on Friday burnt to death in a mob action after he allegedly hit and killed five primary school pupils with a vehicle he was driving.

Joseph Kwaji, the Police Public Relations officer (PPRO), of the Taraba Police Command confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jalingo.

He said that the mob forcefully removed Mr. Umar from the Pupule Police Outpost, where he went to report the incident, and the mob burnt him to death.

“In the early hours of today, one Kassimu Mr. Umar, who is believed to be a lecturer with COE, Zing had knocked down five primary school pupils in Zing, who all died on the spot.

“After he reported the incident to the Pupule Police Outstation, irate youths in their hundreds, stormed the station, dragged him out and lynched him.

“Our investigation revealed that the lecturer was trying to dodge a trailer, when he ran over the pupils whose ages ranged between eight and 11 years,” he said.

Mr. Kwaji said that the matter was under investigation, adding that no arrest had so far been made.

Societies develop by responding to events. Were there sidewalks for the little kids to walk? Was this during school hours? Should the kids not be transported in school buses? Mob justice solves nothing but only describes a jungle society.

Very valid observation.Besides, the late lecturer went to a police station to report which apparently meant he was not trying to run away.May God comfort the families of the kids as well as the lecturer’s.

There’s no need to investigate again.. You allowed the mob to drag him out from under your noses in a police station and burn him to death in the street.

    Case closed, abi?

Terribly sad in all ramifications. Everything is wrong here! Lawlessness in it’s true color!! The lecturer is a typically frustrated Nigerian that maybe due to (personal and societal) pressure misjudged risk posed by the on coming crazy truck driver that must also have had his own share of challenges. His speed and location must have been really inappropriate such that he had to choose between being run over by the truck or swerving into the group of the innocent poor helpless and frightened children and lo and behold this terrible incident. Recovering from the shock of the gravity of what happened the lecturer did the legal and logical thing of running to the police station to report and probably take refuge. The police men probably handicapped by the sheer number of the mob and the lack of training and resources to handle such a situation look the other way and the tragedy runs it’s full course. My first reaction when I read about 5 children being run over by the lecturer was to say…serves him right since it was not just one careless child but a whole 5! Reading it some more it becomes clear he may not have been the villain as it appeared. Sad thing is that this is what many pedestrians and other road users have been escaping by sheer luck… but this time the luck did not just kick in! Our country has become a real jungle…. It is painful and heartbreaking !!!!
